Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has hailed the exemplary moral virtue upheld by late Vivian Ogu, a 14-year-old girl, who was killed ten years ago by assailants who attempted to rape her.
Addressing a delegation from the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin on a visit to the Government House in Benin City, Obaseki said his administration would not give up on its drive to restore good morals in the state.
Late Vivian Ogu, was recently accorded an honour of recognition by Pope Francis on account of her heroic death, as she preferred being killed to being sexually assaulted.
Obaseki noted: “We are on a mission to rebuild our society and the foundation for rebuilding the society starts from its ethics and morality. It is not enough to talk about how society should be like. We want to see people who have walked the talk.”
He noted that late Vivian Ogu stood and died for what she believed, adding that he preferred his administration to be judged on account of its actions.
The governor promised to assist the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin with funding the essential structures at the Vivian Ogu Centre in Benin City which would serve as a site for the National Mission Congress, holding in Edo in October this year.
Earlier, leader of the delegation, Rev. Fr. Stephen Dumbiri, and Chairman, Organising Committee for the National Mission Congress, said Vivian Ogu who was born and raised in Benin, is among 25 persons chosen by Pope Francis to be celebrated as heroes of the Christian faith.
He said the heroic faith of Vivian Ogu would be celebrated during the National Mission Congress and the Extraordinary Mission month of October holding in Edo State, adding that delegates for the event would visit the Vivian Ogu Centre.
Fr. Dumbiri said the honour of recognition accorded to late Vivian by the Vatican became possible through the support of the Edo State Government to the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin in the immortalisation of Vivian Ogu after her death in 2009.
He said the Catholic Archdiocese considers the international recognition of value of Vivian Ogu as a call to strengthen the collaboration with the Edo State Government in upholding the moral standard of youths in the state, noting, “The collaboration to immortalise her will go a long way to negate the negative impression that seems to have been created about the youths of Edo as a result of cases of human trafficking and prostitution from the state.”

…24hrs electricity, other support initiatives to boost industrialisation – gov
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, has assured entrepreneurs set to commence operations at the Edo Production Centre, of the availability of favourable financing options through the apex bank’s NIRSAL National Microfinance Bank, to complement other incentives for industrial production at the facility.
Emefiele, who disclosed this during a visit to the Centre along Sapele Road-axis of Benin City, Edo State, lauded Governor Godwin Obaseki, for his vision in setting up the facility.
The Hub is a cluster for Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) in the state, where they will enjoy 24-hour electricity supply, share resources and other business support services aimed at boosting productivity. The cluster is to be set up in the three Senatorial Districts of the state.
Emefiele identified the biggest challenges faced by SMEs to include access to finance and a conducive environment with constant electricity supply for uninterrupted production, noting that Governor Obaseki has provided a solution to these problems with the production Centre.
The governor of the apex bank added, “For us at the CBN, this facility makes it easy for us to have a place to meet people who are ready to do business. As CBN, we are trying to deal with issues of access to finance and this place provides an opportunity.”
On his part, Edo State Governor, Mr Obaseki said the Centre has helped his administration to move towards hitting the 200,000 jobs target of the state government.
He said, “ We set up this hub to help us achieve our aim of creating a minimum of 200,000 jobs during the first four years in office in the civil service. We are not expected to give out the jobs in the civil service, but rather create most of them in the private sector. So, we are providing opportunities for industrialisation.”
“We are providing 24-hour electricity to ensure profitability, as we have eliminated initial setup cost such as cost for electricity, security, water, among others,” the governor added.
He assured the CBN governor that the Production Centre will be commissioned by the second week of June when the facility will be ready for business, noting, “A lot of people are interested in the facility. We have received about 200 applications from small business owners who have shown interest to own spaces at the hub.”
On opportunities for financing for SMEs, Emefiele said although Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) and microfinance institutions are set up to deal with the issues of financing, the CBN in collaboration with the Bankers’ Committee have established the National Micro Finance Bank to expand access to financing.
“We have set up over 20 centres for the National Micro Finance Bank (NMFB) across the country and I am sure Edo State will have a share,” Emefiele noted.
He said entrepreneurs who wish to benefit from the bank, would enjoy single-digit interest loans, noting, “If you are given a loan with about 9 per cent and if you are getting constant electricity, your cost of production will certainly be low and you can compete effectively, employ others and also grow the economy.”

admin posted a new articleObaseki, Emefiele advocate increased productivity for self-sustaining economy
- 23rd May, 2019
- Nagodwin
The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has made a case for increased productivity and less dependence on importation to build a self-sufficient economy that can withstand shocks from global financial crises.
The governor made the submission while speaking at the 3rd Eminent Persons’ Lecture Series, held at the University of Benin, Ugbowo, Benin City, Edo State.
Obaseki said the lecture is expository as it drew attention to the need for all Nigerians to join hands in addressing the country’s economic challenges, noting, “For Nigeria to grow as a country, every one of us must work to increase productivity and depend less on importation.”
He noted that Nigeria must grow a self-sufficient economy to cope during global financial crises, adding, “We must produce and depend less on external markets. If we don’t, as long as there are external structures beyond our control, we will be at the mercy of these shocks.”
In a lecture titled: Beyond the Global Financial Crisis: Monetary Policy under Global Uncertainty, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele said during the 2008-2009 global financial crisis, emerging market economies like Nigeria witnessed considerable outflow of funds from the stock exchange as foreign investors divested their assets which led to a corresponding depreciation of the Naira from N117 to N135 per dollar.
The CBN governor said the CBN had to deploy both conventional and unconventional tools to support the continued growth of the country’s economy as a simple focus on the monetary policy rate wouldn’t have been sufficient to get the Nigeria economy out of recession.
He added that the CBN is encouraging improved growth in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors given their potential to grow the economy, listing other measures being deployed by CBN to stimulate economic growth to include conserving foreign exchange, risk-based supervision, growth enhancement fiscal policy and development finance intervention, among others.
Vice Chancellor, University of Benin, Prof. Faraday Orumwense, said the Eminent Persons’ Lecture Series was organised to enable staff and students of the institution learn from prominent personalities from all spheres of life.

admin posted a new articleChildren’s Day: Career devt., ethics, others part of new curriculum for Edo schools, says Obaseki
- 27th May, 2019
- Nagodwin
The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration is undertaking a holistic review of the state’s basic education curriculum to make provision for subjects that will assist in grooming children who will fit properly into the information age.
The governor disclosed this during a Thanksgiving Mass held at the St Paul’s Catholic Church, in Benin City, to celebrate the 2019 Children’s Day.
Obaseki said education serves as a tool to build a developed society, adding that subjects such as Career Development, History, Guidance and Counselling, Ethics and Morality are part of new subjects proposed in the new basic education curriculum in the state.
“We want to use education to build a total human being so that at the completion of Junior Secondary school, a child can know what he or she wants to be in life and should fit properly into the society,” the governor said.
He continued, “Over the last 40 years, education has gone through so much transformation in the country. What we are doing in Edo is to start a reformation process from the foundation. This is why we are reforming our basic education sector to allow us build the kind of society we want.”
Obaseki said building a better Nigeria depends on the kind of children being groomed for the future, noting, “We must focus on the children for a better future for our country. The Nigerian child should see him or herself as part of the Nigerian society and contribute to its development.
He said the 2019 Children Day celebration in the state will be celebrated across the three Senatorial districts of the state simultaneously, adding that the Deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu would be in Edo North to celebrate with children, while the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Emmanuel Agbale, will be in Edo Central, while he would celebrate with children in Edo South.
In his homily, the Assistant Parish Priest, Rev. Father Felix Isedu, urged parents to bring up their children in the fear of the Lord, urging them against abusing their children, which he said reduces the child’s confidence.
