Veteran Rapper Says He Was Supposed To Be The Fresh Price But Rejected Benny Medina

55-year-old New York Rapper MC Shan has claimed he was picked for the Fresh Prince role but didn't get the part as he rejected producer Benny Medina's advances.

It's hard to imagine anyone other than Will Smith being the star of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air right now yet, according to MC Shan, he would have likely been the household name - not Will Smith - if not for his rejecting Medina.

Medina, 62, is openly gay and ranked No.48 in's Top 50 Gays in 2007. Actor James Dottley accused Medina of attempting to rape in 2017, claiming the incident took place in 2008 but he only found the courage to reveal the shameful secret after the allegations against Kevin Spacey surfaced. Medina categorically denied the accusation.

“I was up for that Fresh Prince role and Benny Medina was my record company head, and I was up for that Fresh Prince role but how I f*****d that up was I told Benny Medina you are a f****n’ f**got,” Shan said in an interview cited by

“I told Benny Medina to his face ‘You are a f**got!’ Then look what happens with Fresh Prince he is in there doing Six Degrees of Separation. Will is my man, but I could never see myself doing that. Yeah, you are the 20 million dollar man but what part of your soul did you sell? What piece of your a** did you give up?

“I don’t know I’m just allegedly alleging! It didn’t get to the negotiating stage and the money wasn’t worth it for me. I wasn’t for Warner Bros. anyway. I didn’t fit their mold!”

The Fresh Prince was among the most popular shows in the 1990s and remains one television's most iconic sitcoms, having run from 1990-1996 on NBC. HBO Max has announced it will be airing an unscripted reunion special with the show's cast. The Thanksgiving special will feature all of the main cast except for James Avery, who played Uncle Phil, as he sadly passed away seven years ago. Janet Hubert, who played the original Aunt Viv, is also excluded as she was fired and replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid, who will be part of the show.

The special should air around Thanksgiving, which isn't too far away and will bring Tatayana Ali (Ashley Banks), Karyn Parsons (Hilary Banks), Joseph Marcell (Geoffrey Butler), Alfonso Ribiero (Carlton Banks), and DJ Jazzy Jeff back together for what should be a highly nostalgic event.
